Battle Commences - Let the Birdies Begin
The 18 th Volvo China Open teed off bright and early today in calmer weather than the Pros might have previously expected. With the full field of 156 golfers representing no fewer than 29 countries, early scoring was excellent as the players in the leading groups took advantage of the gentle breeze and plotted their way round this intimidating Pete Dye design.
With play starting at 6:45, the first group out included 26-year-old Matthew Baldwin from England who carded a flawless 7-under-par 65 with all seven birdies coming on par 4s. According to Baldwin, “ I just tried to keep everything as simple as I could. My caddie and I set out this morning with a game play of trying to make 18 pars and take our chances when they came, and it turned out to be one of those days where there were a lot of chances and I managed to take a few of them. ”
As the late morning and early afternoon starters teed off, the stiffening wind meant that scoring was going to be a great deal harder and this was reflected in the fact that with one or two late exceptions, those who played in the morning feature heavily at the top of the first-day leaderboard . Indeed, Baldwin holds the lead o n his own with six players just a shot behind including former winner Scott Strange from Australia.Just one s troke further b ack at 5-under are several more including young South African Brandon Grace who has won twice this year already including the prestigious Volvo Golf Champions which was held in his native country in January. This group also contains another recent winner of the Volvo China Open, Ireland's Damie n McGrane .Defending champion Nicolas Colsaerts got off to a blistering start with an eagle at the second followed by a birdie at the third, ending on a very pleasing 4-under-par, the same score as a large group of golfers including Paul Casey and Colin Montgomerie .
As the final players signed their cards after a long day's golf, those who had experienced the more diff icult conditions could look forward to the tee times being reversed tomorrow and the hope that a more b enign breeze would offer better opportunities.
